Data Journalist (m/f/d)

As an editor or editor, you are always close to the events that move our country and to the people who live here. Whether it comes to political decisions, economic developments or cultural events, as an editor or editor, you can access relevant information and promote public discourse. You can independently research, check and evaluate data – from public databases as well as from exclusive material – and recognize the history behind the numbers. You can independently implement supra-regional data projects with journalistic relevance and develop data-driven stories together with our investigative team that have an effect. You use numbers, maps, geodata and interactive graphics to understand complex topics – working closely with the Visual Team and introducing your own ideas. You design and build reusable solutions such as webwidgets, common databases and editorial tools, roll them into several editorial offices and ensure their sustainable use. Together with local partner talks, you develop local and regional data stories and talk about the direct exchange with local speeches across the network – supra-regional lighthouse projects and local relevance are always thinking together. You will always look at the latest AI developments, implement AI projects in practice and discuss innovative developments together with editorial product developers from the Fortis team. In the day-to-day business, you support the news team, drive your own larger projects and work with our numerous partners.

You bring a strong journalistic background and follow social developments attentively – your broad general knowledge helps you quickly classify topics. Experience in local and regional journalism is expressly welcome. You can master Python and JavaScript at least in the basics, HTML and CSS are familiar to you. With large amounts of data you are able to manage and have already worked with tools such as Datawrapper or QGIS. Of course, you use AI-based tools and follow up current developments. Ideally, you have already worked with AI programming tools like Claude Code or Cursor and understand the technical principles. You can tell stories beyond the classic text – in interactive and explaining formats that go new ways on the web. The following abilities would be advantageous: OSINT research, statistical modelling, evaluation of large quantities of text with language models, work with geo and satellite data, or experience with the operation of own infrastructure such as databases and Linux servers. You cooperate closely with colleagues from editors, technology and design, and share your knowledge with you willingly. Teamwork is important to you. Multiannual experience in data journalism is of great advantage for this role.
